I was 285lbs when I first started to come to the gym. I couldn’t do what everybody else could just yet but I was welcomed. I kept on going and a year later I was taking my first kickboxing match weighing in at 172 lbs. I look forward to walking into those doors every day and can’t even imagine what my life would be like without you guys.

“I began 2014 really sluggish, unmotivated, and out of shape. I did not like working out especially in front of other people but I knew I had to get out of my comfort zone in order to get what I wanted. So I started training 2x a week and focused on my nutrition. I stayed consistent, and the results started coming. I also made some great friends with the people I have trained with. I also developed a love for grappling to! I used to be intimidated if I was the only girl but everyone was so nice and I liked how much stronger I was getting. This is the best shape I have ever been in-and it has only been a year! I am down over 30 lbs!”

“I was always a skinny kid then I grew up and got a job at an office where I sat at a desk all day and got up to 240 lbs.I was also smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. Then I met Coach John and Sandra and they changed my life completely. Within the first month I lost 20 lbs and was smoking a few cigarettes a day. Within 2 months I lost 40 lbs. all together and stopped smoking completely. After all the dedication I got down to 170 lbs. and have been able to keep the weight off. Not only did they boost my confidence like never before I also competed a few times and now I’m an assistant Coach in the kids class on my way to being the head instructor of the kids classes. Coach Potenza wealth of knowledge and friendly personality is enough to keep you wanting to come back. If you want a nice welcoming training place with a legit martial arts instructor Average Joe’s MMA is the place for you!”

Top of the food chain

The name Average Joe’s is quite the misnomer for someone with the skill set of Sensei John Potenza. Anyone looking to train with him can expect high level material and a good time !

I’ve been training with sensei Potenza for 7+ years in New Jersey and all I can say is that he’s the best in the business. One of the nicest people I’ve ever met and he has dedicated his life to teaching the martial arts in the best way I’ve ever seen. I’d give 10 stars if I could.

Coach Potenza is one of the best in the business.
His schools are more then MMA gyms, they are family.
The years I’ve spent learning from Coach Potenza and being part of the Modern Martial Arts family, has changed my life.
If you have the opportunity to train with John Potenza, don’t miss out! Average Joe’s WILL be awesome!!

I tried many other gyms in Jersey before training with Sensei Potenza, when I first started there weren’t many women in the sport yet but I still never felt uncomfortable in his classes! I have been training there for 3 years but this past January I started to train with them at least once a week (used to go once or twice a month) and I have lost over 30 pounds! You cannot put a price on his training at all! He is one of the nicest and humble people you’ll ever meet. When Hurricane Sandy hit, and people had no power/hot water/heat, he offered to let people sleep in his gym. He’s the best to learn from!

Best training out here! Sensei Potenza is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met in the game! This gym is more than a bunch of people getting together and hitting eachother, its a family.

Coach John Potenza is without a doubt one of the most well rounded Martial Artists I’ve met in my 20 plus years of training. If you live in the Prescott, Arizona area and have the slightest interest in getting started do yourself a favor and check out Average Joe’s MMA.

Nothing average about the training you will get here. Coaches Potenza and Bane have changed the way that I see submission fighting. Some of the slickest taps in the game, all the way back to the greats of Catch. Thanks for everything, Coach!!

Average is one of the last kinds of training you’ll get here. Coach John Is one of the best in the game, he’s extremely knowledgeable and one of the innovators of the insane art of catch wrestling. Not to mention training with him your not just getting amazing training you’re joining a family.

Coach John is focused and great with people of all ages! He encourages them to be their best and really knows the art. My 16 year old son has been going for several months now and has learned a lot from him including confidence and self discipline. Thank you John!

Ok so you know those guys in life who have all these talents and all these skills that make the rest of us feel like we’re a bunch of slackers? Well that’s Sensei John. Now he’s humble about it and all. But if you look at it his credentials it’s like the credits at the end of a movie. And it shows when he trains you. He can strike, he can grapple. He can even do weapons. I swear to God he’s like the most interesting man in the world.
He’s also a phenomenal teacher. He teaches you high percentage moves. He knows the ins and outs of them and what to do in every situation. I’ve never seen this guy give a bad piece of advice.
Just as good is the training atmosphere. Simply put, it’s so much fun training under him. Under his lead, everyone there is out to have fun, and kick ass. You see it in all of his former and current students. It’s like a few others mentioned, a family. The students you will be training with, if you go to his school, are friendly, they help each other out. There aren’t any egos. No politics. Nobody purposely beating each other up. You don’t find this at every other school. At this place, it’s all about the martial arts.
Another thing about John is he develops champions. Back in the day when I was training under him, there would be a whole slew of guys out there competing and quite a few of them were champions. He works you hard. He works you well. So when you get out there, your opponent better be damn good otherwise he’s tapping out or getting knocked out.
Sensei John is also the nicest guy in the world. He’s got a great sense of humor. He’s respectful and encouraging. He’s humble. I always felt appreciated. Notice how so many of his former students from New Jersey are his friends. That says something.
You’re lucky when you can find an instructor like him. He also offers a free introductory class so you have nothing to lose. Trust me. Try it out.
